In November 2012, Berkeley voters will have an opportunity to elect or re-elect a progressive pro-tenant slate to the Berkeley Rent Board. Current Rent Board commissioners whose terms are expiring are: Asa Dodsworth, Nicole Drake, Judy Shelton, & Igor Tregub.
This means there will be 4 positions on the slate that will be chosen at the 2012 Berkeley Tenants Convention!
These positions will be open to the community, not just the incumbents. (It’s unclear how many incumbents are running, and if all incumbents will be supported by the Convention- we’ll find out when the voting’s done!)
How do you become nominated by the Berkeley Tenants Convention? Well, there are three components to the nomination- below is a quick sketch- details like actual questionnaires etc are coming soon.
Questionnaire: If you are interested in being considered for the progressive Rent Board slate at the Tenant Convention, please complete the pending candidate questionnaire and submit it to someone t.b.a. Each candidate who indicates their interest in running will be asked to participate in a 15-30 minute interview with a panel of representatives from different community organization about your background and interest in running for the Rent Board. After all interviews are completed the panel with make recommendations to the Tenant Convention for its consideration.
Screening: A candidate interview and screening will be held in late May or early June at a time and location to be determined. Representatives from various progressive organizations will have an opportunity to ask candidates questions.
The Convention: The convention itself will be held on a Sunday in June, 2012 to be announced. Watch this space for updates!
Thank you to everyone who volunteered, donated, came to one of our fundraisers, and of course, everyone who voted for us. We will represent you and all of Berkeley honestly and fairly.
Here are the totals as of 11/19/10, 7 days after the election. These numbers may change slightly.
Name/# of votes/% of total votes
Jesse Townley 17,456 14%
Pam Webster 16,117 13%
Dave Blake 15,784 13%
Lisa Stephens 15,336 13%
Kathy Harr 15,231 13%
Asa Dodsworth 15,022 12%
P.S.- Personal note from Jesse Townley: I’d like to recognize that all 9 candidates who ran for these 6 seats kept personal rancor largely out of the campaign and it was a respectful, straight-forward race, especially in comparison to some of the other Berkeley campaigns this year.
(I’m speaking for myself here, only because I haven’t spoken with my slate mates about this note yet)
Today’s the day! Remember, vote SHERRY (the last letters of our 6 names = SHERRY!)
